Peanuts are the most common food allergens. The British Medical Research Council recently announced that it has successfully developed a new blood test method to determine the accuracy of peanut allergy up to 98%, and will not cause adverse reactions such as anaphylactic shock.

The current methods commonly used to screen for food allergies are skin prick tests and serum immunoglobulin E tests, but false positives or overdiagnosis may occur. In order to obtain more accurate results, oral food stimulation tests are often required, and there is a risk of causing severe allergic reactions.

Alexandra Santos, MD, Ph.D., of King's College, University of London, who is responsible for the study, believes that traditional methods focus on detecting antibodies and that the results are not satisfactory. The new detection method, called MAT, focuses on the observation of mast cells that are closely related to food allergies.

Researchers added peanut protein to mast cells, which recognize and modulate immunoglobulin E in the blood to produce biomarkers associated with allergic reactions that are detected.

Santos said that they extracted blood samples from 174 children, 73 of whom were allergic to peanuts. The researchers tested it in a new way. "The test results are very accurate. Once the test results are positive, the allergy can be determined." The more activated mast cells, the more severe the allergic reaction.

The study's report has been published in the American Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The report shows that compared to oral food challenge tests must be carried out under the supervision of allergy specialists, this new test method is not only safe and accurate, but also cheaper.

Researchers believe that this new test method can also be applied to the detection of other food allergies, such as milk, eggs, sesame seeds, nuts and so on. In addition, pharmaceutical companies can use this method to monitor and evaluate patients' allergic reactions to drugs in clinical trials.

Peanut allergies can cause swelling of the face and throat, which can cause death in severe cases, and is receiving increasing attention due to its potential risk and increasing global incidence. (Technology Daily)
