According to Australian Network reported on the 17th, a superbug with a mortality rate of 50% has infected dozens of people in Victoria, Australia. It is reported that since last year, this superbug has caused two deaths directly in a hospital in Victoria.

Victorian hospitals to upgrade prevention and control measures

It is reported that the major hospitals in Victoria have been paying close attention to this superbug called KPC from now on. Because a new variant of the superbug has caused 57 Victorians to become ill over the past three years, and the germ is spreading between patients in the state's St Vincent hospital.

A Victorian Health Department spokesperson said that 18 of the 57 people infected with the disease in Victoria have died, but it is unclear whether the disease directly caused them to die. It is reported that the bacteria can multiply in the intestines of patients without causing any symptoms.

But Kumar Visvanathan, an infectious specialist at St. Vincent's Hospital, said the superbug last year directly killed two patients in the hospital. He said that since 2012, St. Vincent Hospital has confirmed 28 patients. Among them, 10 people were hospitalized because of infection.

It is reported that St. Vincent Hospital has strengthened the prevention and control procedures for bacterial infections, screened susceptible patients, accelerated the testing procedures, steam disinfected the wards, and educated patients to clean their hands and immediately isolate the carriers.

It is understood that Victoria has found 5 cases this year. Weswantan said: "We will do everything we can to eliminate KPC superbugs. We have achieved some victories at this stage. I think we can control the situation."

The first patient in Victoria is infected overseas

It is reported that the first case of KPC infection in Victoria is likely to be infected from overseas and then brought back to Victoria. The Victorian Health Department has ordered increased control over new hospitalized patients who have had overseas travel experiences last year. A Victorian Health Department spokesperson said that similar cases have been found in other Victorian hospitals, but the names of these hospitals cannot be disclosed.

It is understood that KPC superbugs will multiply in the intestines of patients, but will not cause clinical diseases. However, some patients develop urinary tract infections and blood infections that are more difficult to treat. This depends on the patient's own immunity to resist the bacteria, and the patient's response to antibiotic treatment.

Weswantan said that KPC superbugs have become popular overseas in recent years, mainly in Greece, Italy and some parts of Asia. The patient is mainly infected with the disease in the hospital by human excretion, and the bacteria spread to the surface of other objects.

Victorian Health Minister Jill Hennessy said there would be no major public health outbreaks in Victoria. However, Victoria is strengthening its prevention and control and will report the incident in time.
