Professor Lu Qingbin from the School of Science at the University of Waterloo in Canada has pioneered a new molecular-based approach, which has led to the discovery that a new class of non-platinum halogenated molecules can both kill cancer cells and prevent damage to healthy cells.

Femtosecond laser spectroscopy has traditionally been used to study chemical reactions that occur at the molecular level. The laser can take a series of "snapshots" as the molecules react and change structurally. The technology, called femtosecond medicine, is an emerging field of science developed by Professor Lu to apply ultrafast lasers to molecular biology and cell biology.

Professor Lu used the tool to study the molecular mechanism of cell canceration at the time of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) damage, and the working mechanism of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, especially cisplatin chemotherapy, which is widely used to treat various cancers.

Professor Lu said that DNA damage is the first step. Using the new femtosecond medical method, researchers can trace the source and find out the primary cause of DNA damage, and then discover the cause of mutation and cancer.

By learning more about the basic mechanisms of disease, Professor Lu pre-selected the molecules most likely to be effective anti-cancer drugs. He found that a class of non-platinum molecules is structurally similar to cisplatin but does not contain the toxicity of platinum. Preclinical studies on various human and murine cultured cells have shown that these new molecules are effective against cervical, breast, ovarian and lung cancers.

The results of the study and preclinical trials were published this month in the open access journal E Biomedical. The journal is a new research clinical journal jointly published by the journals of Cell and Lancet. Professor Lu has applied for patents for the newly discovered series of non-platinum halogenated molecules and hopes to start clinical trials as soon as possible.
