Since the early 1970s, our province began to artificially raise river crabs in the Dongting Lake area. By 2009, the crab breeding in the Dongting Lake area formed a “climate”. The province's river crab breeding area reached 520,000 mu and the output was more than 5,800 tons. The total output value exceeded 500 million yuan. At present, except for satisfying the local market, most crabs in our province are exported to Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Hong Kong and Macao.

In order to speed up the development of the crab industry, the “Planning” formulated by the Provincial Animal Husbandry and Aquatic Products Bureau proposed that in the next few years, the province will focus on supporting the development of the crab industry from three aspects. The first is to build a good seed supply system. The province has built 3 breeding bases for crabs and crabs, and has produced 100 million crabs each year. It has also expanded and expanded 7 crab cultivation bases, and has produced 900,000 kilograms of crabs each year, which has exceeded the “bottleneck” that restricts the development of the crab industry. The second is to establish a healthy breeding demonstration area. With Yueyang City, Yiyang City and Changde City as the key regions, 15 crab health aquaculture demonstration areas with an annual output of more than 100 tons of crabs were created, and demonstrations led to the healthy breeding of river crabs in the province. The third is to cultivate three industrialized leading enterprises. Adopting the model of “company + base + farmer”, it helps to strengthen the cultivation, sales, and processing of “through-train” specialized industrial groups, promotes brand integration, and targets the Dongting Lake hairy crab brands.
