Biologists at Johns Hopkins University in the United States have developed human retinal tissue in laboratory wares, taking steps to treat color blindness and macular degeneration.

According to the news released by Johns Hopkins University on the 11th, the team led by Robert Johnston spent 9 months in the laboratory to develop a fully developed human retinal tissue.

Johnston said that the exciting part of this research is to make the "organs" cultivated in the laboratory a "model system" for studying human development at the cellular level.

They found that cones that sensed blue light were formed first, followed by cones that sensed red and green light. They also found that thyroid hormones play an important role in growing cells that grow into cones that sense light of a particular color that is not controlled by the thyroid gland but is entirely dependent on the eye. These findings gave researchers insight into why preterm infants with low levels of thyroid hormones have a high risk of developing visual illness.

Knowing the effects of thyroid hormones, the researchers developed a retina that only senses blue, green, or red light by controlling the level of this hormone.

According to Kiara Eldred, who is involved in the study, understanding the formation of cones that sense different colors of light is a step closer to restoring color vision to people with damaged photoreceptors.

The research team intends to further understand color vision and macular formation mechanisms by studying artificially cultivated retinas in the future. The macula is located in the optical center of the human eye, and the depression in the center of the macula is the most sensitive place of vision. Because macular degeneration is likely to cause blindness, the researchers plan to find new ways to treat macular degeneration by exploring how to develop new macular.

The research report will be published in the journal Science. (According to Xinhua News Agency)
