Martin Evans first discovered mouse embryonic stem cells (Source: https://phys.org)

Stem cell research is carried out on the basal cells of humans, plants and other organisms. These basal cells undergo development and reproduction to form important tissues necessary for normal body function, such as heart tissue, skin tissue, blood tissue and lung tissue. Research on human cells began in 1800, when biologists and medical researchers discovered that cell development and function play an important role in the body. In 1981, Martin Evans first discovered mouse embryonic stem cells. This discovery marks the beginning of a long and controversial journey in stem cell research. At present, many countries in the world have invested heavily in stem cell research. The United States is a leading country in stem cell research. Other countries participating in the study are Iran, South Korea, Australia and China.

American stem cell research

The United States is the most popular country for stem cell research and dates back to the beginning of the 1980s. So far, the country has conducted 136 stem cell research trials. At the beginning of stem cell research, the federal government refused to fund researchers who used human embryos in experiments. In 1995, the US Congress enacted a law prohibiting federal funding research leading to stagnant human embryonic stem cell research. In 1998, privately funded researchers successfully identified stem cells in human embryos despite limited funding. In 2001, President Bush relaxed the federal government's funding for stem cell research. On March 9, 2009, the Barrack Obama administration lifted all restrictions on stem cell research funding.

The United States still maintains strict guidelines for stem cell research and use. However, enlightened regulatory policies have greatly improved the medical field in the United States by encouraging stem cell research. However, countries such as Kansas, Virginia, Louisiana, Iowa, Nebraska, and Michigan still limit stem cell research and the use of human embryos in experiments.

Iranian stem cell research

Iran ranks second in the list of countries where stem cell research is popular. Iran’s stem cell research began to be highly valued, and the distinguished leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, gave a green light to this research in 2002. Unlike the United States, where human embryos are controversial in stem cell research, Iran's stem cell research has not encountered such obstacles. Therefore, Iran has made great progress in the 14 years of this research. The Royan Institute in Tehran, Iran is the leading centre for stem cell research in the country. There have been 65 clinical trials of stem cell research to date.

Korean stem cell research

South Korea ranks third in the list of countries where stem cell research is popular. In fact, this country was the world leader in stem cell research in the early 21st century. There are already 60 clinical trials in stem cell research in Korea. However, the major scandal involving Korean leading professors in 2005 led to the decline of stem cell research in the country. Professor Hwang Woo-Suk has made many achievements in cloning human embryonic stem cells. Fraudulent claims have led to the ban on stem cell research in Korea. Until 2016, President Park Wong-hee lifted the ban and provided government funding to scientists involved in the study.

Advantages of stem cell research

Stem cell research has led to significant improvements in human life. Research has been used to study human development important to doctors. Drug manufacturers also use this technology to produce effective drugs. In addition, patients who require organ transplantation also benefit from stem cell research.
