Bosworth started 3D printing nipples in 2010, when she just retired from Dell, who had worked for 20 years, and fortunately met Dr. Thomas Boland, the father of bioprinting, which inspired her to enter the field. In 2011, she and Boland co-founded TeVido to further develop 3D printing technology and began an in-depth study of the human tissue printing market. Bosworth conservatively estimates that TeVido's products will have at least $6 billion in market.

“Our fat grafts are mainly used in plastic surgery. For example, our products have recently been used to treat chemotherapy and leave scars,” she said. “Maybe one day, we can make a fat transplant that is big enough, such as for women. To make a small breast augmentation, we can customize the matching breasts and even the complexion."

What TeVido has to do is to use the female's own fat and skin cells for fat transplantation, keeping the nipple in its original position and staying active, so that there is no need for repeated heavy surgery. “The reason for choosing from the nipple is because it is small, but as the technology matures, we can make bigger fat transplants, and even fat grafts on the calves and buttocks are possible.”

In addition to nipples, TeVido is working on small fat transplants for women who have had mastectomy. Breast reconstruction surgery requires multiple steps, and reappearing a female nipple may be the most difficult part. Some surgeries have begun to use the skin to reproduce the shape of the nipple, and some have added implants and added color through tattoos. These methods can cause problems, for example, the nipple is easily squashed, the color of the smear is easily faded, and the filler sometimes has many deficiencies.

TeVido completed the first round of laboratory testing with a grant from the National Institutes of Health subsidies and a $150,000 grant from the Science Foundation. In order to be able to enter the second phase of testing, TeVido is seeking more funding. Once enough money is available for the next round of experiments, Bosworth and her team can determine how much skin cells need to be printed in 3D, how many fat cells are needed in each centimeter of transplantation, and the best and most stable product to produce. What is the ideal parameter? The final product will be available at least five years later, during which TeVido will continue to conduct testing and clinical trials and await approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.

For medical technology startups, the time period for success is longer. But Bosworth said it was those breast cancer survivors who continually motivated her to give her the motivation to move on. “Although there are certain risks, if you can rely on 3D printing to complete skin and fat transplants, you can improve the quality of life of millions of people.”
