Russian researchers have recently developed a bioactive adsorbent that can adsorb almost all microorganisms and bacteriophages in water. The new adsorbent is made of low-cost, environmentally friendly cotton cellulose and boehmite, the main component of which is aluminum hydroxide. The researchers first treated cotton cellulose with a 1% silica suspension, then mixed it with boehmite powder, and activated the mixture with a sinusoidal alternating current at a frequency of 50 Hz to make non-spherical aluminum hydroxide. Large particles adhere to the surface of cotton cellulose to form larger adsorbents. This sorbent is made of cotton cellulose and can produce a positive charge that can adsorb negatively charged microorganisms and bacteriophages. The researchers hope that this adsorbent will be widely used in the fields of medicine, veterinary medicine, food industry, and water and solution purification.
